Newmarket Ward 6 Sets a New Standard for Sustainable Communities

Seeing long-term commitments to building a stronger, more sustainable community come to life is one of the things I am most proud of.

This week marked an exciting milestone for Shining Hill with the announcement that more than 1,000 new homes in the community will be built with heat pump technology. Believed to be the largest committed residential heat pump installation in Canada to date, it represents a major step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating more energy-efficient homes for future residents.

This achievement builds on the landmark agreement reached between the Town of Newmarket and the Shining Hill development team in 2022. The agreement secured the transfer of approximately 80 acres of environmentally sensitive land into public ownership and established a vision for a sustainable, connected community along the Yonge Street corridor.

From the beginning, Shining Hill was designed to be more than a residential development. It was envisioned as a community that balances housing, environmental stewardship, recreation, and sustainability. The approved plans include green and affordable housing options, low-impact development features, an extensive trail network, more than 5,000 new trees, and recreational amenities including the tennis clubhouse and courts that are now open and being enjoyed by residents.

The addition of heat pumps to every home takes this vision even further.

Heat pumps provide highly efficient heating and cooling while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional systems. They help lower energy consumption, improve home comfort, and support broader climate goals by reducing reliance on fossil fuels. For homeowners, this means homes that are designed for the future while helping reduce their environmental footprint.

The initiative has been described as an innovative community-building partnership that supports Newmarket’s environmental sustainability goals. By incorporating heat pumps into more than 1,000 homes, Newmarket is helping to create a healthier and more sustainable community for current and future generations.

The announcement has also been recognized by environmental advocates. Climate Action Newmarket Aurora, which has been involved in the Shining Hill partnership in an advisory capacity for several years, described the commitment as a significant win for the environment and a leading example that communities across Ontario and Canada should consider following.

As Newmarket continues to grow, it is important that growth is accompanied by thoughtful planning, environmental responsibility, and investments that benefit future generations. The Shining Hill partnership demonstrates what can be achieved when municipalities, developers, environmental advocates, and community partners work together toward a shared vision.

This announcement is about more than heat pumps. It is about building communities differently. It is about protecting the environment while creating new housing opportunities. And it is about ensuring that Newmarket remains a leader in innovation, sustainability, and quality of life.

I am grateful to everyone who helped make this vision possible and look forward to seeing Shining Hill continue to grow into one of Canada’s leading examples of sustainable community development.
