Celebrating Excellence in Sport and Community: Newmarket’s 2026 Awards and Hall of Fame
The Sport Awards and Sports Hall of Fame are where excellence meets legacy. They recognize not only what has been achieved, but the people and values that continue to shape the future of sport in Newmarket.
On April 9, Newmarket came together at the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre for the annual Sport Awards and Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, an evening dedicated to recognizing the athletes, builders, and volunteers who make our community proud.
From the energy in the room to the pride shared across families, coaches, and teammates, it was clear that sport continues to play a vital role in bringing our community together.
This year’s award recipients reflect the very best of Newmarket:
Jackie Tranter – Community Spirit Award
Chris Prior – Coach of the Year
Jay Major & Brent Craddock – Inclusive Sport Award
Riley Innes – Youth Athlete of the Year
Huron Heights Warriors Football Team – Team of the Year
Jason French (Posthumous) – Herb Cain Memorial Award
Maddie McCullough – Athlete of the Year
Each name represents a story of commitment, perseverance, and leadership. Whether on the field, behind the bench, or supporting others in their journey, these individuals and teams have made a lasting impact on our community.
Having the honour of addressing more than 200 guests and presenting the Athlete of the Year Award was a moment I will not forget. Speaking about Maddie McCullough’s accomplishments at just 18 years old, representing Team Canada, earning international gold, and leading at the elite level, was a powerful reminder of what dedication and passion can achieve.
We also celebrated the newest inductees into Newmarket’s Sports Hall of Fame:
Charlie Macoun (Posthumous) – Builder
Drew Laskoski – Builder
John “Cuddy Shark” Cudmore – Builder
Richard Lunney – Athlete/Builder
Their contributions have helped shape the foundation of sport in Newmarket and continue to inspire future generations.
It was also a pleasure to celebrate alongside Mayor John Taylor and my fellow Members of Council, who each played a role in recognizing the outstanding individuals and teams that make our community so strong.
Evenings like this do not happen without the dedication of many. Thank you to the sponsors, organizers, and everyone who continues to support sport in Newmarket.
A special thank you to Town of Newmarket staff and our Master of Ceremonies, Franco De Marco, for delivering such a meaningful and seamless event.

Looking forward to celebrating again in 2029. If you know someone making a difference through sport, I encourage you to consider nominating them so we can continue recognizing those who shape and strengthen our community.
