Back to School in Newmarket: Safety, Community, and Connection

As September begins, Newmarket comes alive with the excitement of a new school year. For families, it’s a time of fresh routines, new friendships, and opportunities for growth. For me, both as your Ward 6 Councillor and as Chair of the Sir William Mulock Secondary School Council, it’s also a reminder of how important it is to work together to keep our community safe, connected, and thriving.

Safety First: Back to School on Our Roads

This year, the Town of Newmarket has installed a new pedestrian crossover at Gorham Street and Muriel Street, with a crossing guard in place starting the first day of school. This investment underscores our commitment to protecting children and families on their daily journeys.

A reminder to all drivers: you must come to a complete stop at pedestrian crossovers and wait until the person has fully crossed before moving forward. Ignoring this rule risks not only a $1,000 fine and 4 demerit points, but more importantly, the safety of our community.

Sir William Mulock School Council: Get Involved

As Chair of the Sir William Mulock School Council, I invite parents and guardians to join us for our first School Council meeting and elections on Monday, September 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library.
This is a wonderful opportunity to share ideas, support student success, and play an active role in shaping the school year.

Photo Day

Also on Monday, September 8, students will have their school photos taken. Photos are free for the Student Activity Card, and families can purchase additional packages online through Lifetouch. Retakes are scheduled for October 7, 2025.

Transit & Healthy Kids Resources

  • York Region Transit School Special Routes begin on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. Families can check YRT school routes to plan ahead.

  • York Region Public Health’s Healthy Kids portal offers tips on everything from sleep routines and healthy lunches to immunizations and dental health. Visit york.ca/HealthyKids to explore resources for a healthy, successful school year.

As we begin this new chapter, let’s commit to working together — keeping our roads safe, supporting our students, and building connections that strengthen Newmarket.

Wishing all students, families, and educators a safe and successful start to the school year.

With gratitude,
Kelly Broome
Councillor, Ward 6, Town of Newmarket
Chair, Sir William Mulock Secondary School Council
