Stay Fire Smart this summer with Central York Fire Services

Throughout this summer, Central York Fire Services (CYFS) is hitting the streets in Newmarket and Aurora with a vital mission: keeping our communities safe by raising awareness about the importance of home fire escape plans and life-saving alarm systems.

Through neighbourhood visits, friendly conversations, and home safety inspections, CYFS firefighters are helping residents take simple but critical steps to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Why Fire Safety Education Matters

In the event of a fire, every second counts. That’s why CYFS is emphasizing the need for households to not only have a home fire escape plan but to practice it regularly. Fires can double in size every 30 seconds—and knowing how to exit quickly and safely can save lives.

This campaign is about more than reminders. It’s about empowering families, caregivers, and seniors with the knowledge and tools to prevent tragedies before they happen.

What the Law Requires

CYFS also wants to ensure residents understand their legal responsibilities when it comes to smoke and carbon monoxide alarms:

Smoke alarms must be installed on every level of the home, including basements
Carbon monoxide alarms must be installed outside all sleeping areas
Alarms must be kept in working order—tested monthly and batteries replaced as needed

Failure to comply with Ontario's Fire Code can result in fines of up to $50,000 for individuals and $100,000 for corporations, as well as increased risk to your family's safety.

Free Fire Safety Home Inspections

To support this effort, CYFS is offering free home fire safety inspections throughout the summer. These inspections are particularly helpful for:

  • Seniors living independently

  • Families with young children

  • New homeowners or tenants

  • Anyone unsure about the placement or condition of their alarms

If you or a loved one would benefit from a visit, you can book a free inspection by calling 905-895-9222.

What to Expect During a Visit

CYFS firefighters will be visiting neighbourhoods throughout July and August, providing:

  • Fire escape planning tips

  • Guidance on alarm installation and testing

  • Free smoke alarm battery checks or replacements (when needed)

  • Resources for further education and preparedness

You may see crews walking door-to-door or stopping at local events to share safety resources. The goal is not enforcement but engagement, education, and prevention.

Keeping Older Adults Safe

Older adults are particularly at risk during home fires due to mobility challenges, hearing impairments, or slower response times. CYFS encourages caregivers and families to:

  • Test alarms monthly with older relatives

  • Review home layouts and identify the safest escape routes

  • Practice escape plans and assign a buddy system if necessary

CYFS inspections are a great opportunity to help keep elderly parents, neighbours, and friends safe.
