Future Newmarket: A Bold Vision for Growth to 2051

What Is the Official Plan Review?

The Official Plan (OP) is a foundational document that guides how and where Newmarket will grow. It sets policies on everything from housing and employment to green space and infrastructure. This review is especially important as it:

  • Aligns with the Province of Ontario’s Growth Plan and York Region’s Official Plan

  • Responds to the needs of current and future residents

  • Integrates environmental, economic, and social priorities

The plan will guide land use decisions to the year 2051—making it one of the most forward-looking planning exercises in Newmarket’s history.

The South of Davis Area (SODA) Study

SODA is a key area within Newmarket poised for new opportunities. The study explores how this part of town can evolve thoughtfully, balancing new housing and business spaces while enhancing the local character.

SODA will act as a test case for growth—how to apply modern planning tools, create livable spaces, and ensure new development supports community well-being.

The Launch of “Future Newmarket”

With the recent release of the Future Newmarket vision, residents, businesses, and stakeholders are getting their first look at what’s possible. This vision is supported by thematic policy direction reports focused on:

  • Jobs & Employment: Protecting key employment areas and encouraging innovation

  • Parks & Open Space: Expanding and enhancing green spaces, trails, and recreational opportunities

  • Growth Management: Directing growth to areas best suited for change, especially near transit and existing infrastructure

  • Housing & Complete Communities: Offering diverse housing choices and walkable neighbourhoods

  • Climate Action & Sustainability: Prioritizing green infrastructure and low-carbon growth

Together, these themes form a Future-Focused framework to ensure Newmarket grows smartly, equitably, and sustainably.

Why It Matters

The decisions being made today will shape how we live, work, and move in Newmarket for decades. This is not just about zoning—it’s about:

  • Creating jobs close to home

  • Protecting green spaces for future generations

  • Ensuring a mix of housing options for all ages and incomes

  • Supporting vibrant main streets and local businesses

  • Building infrastructure that supports health, climate goals, and resilience

What’s Next?

The release of the land use vision and policy directions is a major step toward drafting a new Official Plan, expected in the coming year. The Town will be continuing public engagement throughout the process to ensure the final plan reflects the voices of the community.

Now’s the time to get involved and help shape Newmarket’s future.
