New Accessible Van Parking Signs Arrive in Downtown Newmarket

If you’ve walked or driven through downtown Newmarket recently, you may have noticed some new signage marking special side-loading accessible van parking spaces. These spots now available along Main Street and in the Riverwalk Commons P3 parking lot are designed to improve access and mobility for residents and visitors who use vans equipped with wheelchair lifts.

These new parking spaces are wider than standard accessible spots, allowing room for a lift to be safely deployed. That space is essential to ensure that individuals using mobility devices, such as wheelchairs or power scooters, can enter and exit their vehicles safely and independently.

These designated spaces are by permit only, and we kindly ask all drivers to be respectful and leave them available for those who truly need them. Unlike typical spots, regular accessible spaces do not have the extra clearance required for side-loading vans, making these new additions a vital step forward in ensuring equitable access for all.

This initiative is a direct result of input from the Town of Newmarket’s Accessibility Advisory Committee, who continue to advocate for meaningful changes that make our community more inclusive, welcoming, and barrier-free.

Where to Find the New Spaces:

  • Main Street, near key shops and services

  • P3 Parking Lot at Riverwalk Commons, near community events and recreational spaces

Creating a truly inclusive community starts with small changes that have a big impact. Thank you to everyone who played a role in making this update happen and to all residents for doing their part to support accessibility in Newmarket.

Let’s continue building a town where everyone belongs.
