NEW All-Way Stop Sign and Crosswalk Summerhill South

In listening to residents of a growing community is was noted that crossing Sawmill Valley Drive was becoming more and more difficult.  The centrally located school crossing served students coming from the east and west sides of the school.  However, the town installed the crossing before construction of the subdivision south of Terry Fox Public School.  At the time staff decided to wait until the construction was completed.

I requested we review the crossing guard location again in 2015, engineering staff considered a school crossing at Peter Hall Drive, or directly in front of Terry Fox School.  However, staff recommended that the school crossing remains in the original location just west of Society Cresent.

The safety of the residents crossing the road continued to be a concern, so direction was made to staff review and report back on the potential for an all-way stop at Sawmill Valley Drive and Peter Hall Drive and opportunities for crosswalk enhancements.  Staff reviewed the crossing again and noted an increase in students coming from the west.  Based on observed patterns a new location for an all-way stop was considered, as well as the relocation of the existing school crossing.  This new school crossing located at the path on Sawmill Valley Drive between Society Cresent and Colter Street.  This will allow the crossing guard to have an independent crossing area and provide the crossing for not only Terry Fox Public School but also offer to cross students attending Sir William Mulock Secondary School and St. John Chrysostom Catholic Elementary School.

On November 13, 2017, this recommendation moved by Councillor Broome was adopted and the traffic All-Way Stop and Area Traffic Review began.  The engineering approved recommendations came back to council and were approved unanimously by the council in March 2018.

This is a very positive change and significate to the safety of the residents.  I am very grateful for the families in the area for working with me to get this change achieved.

The work will be undertaken during the summer, and be completed before the start of the school in the Fall September 2018.

By working together, sharing information, ideas and being engaged in our community, we can achieve results for Ward 6 together.
