Town asks residents for input on cannabis retail locations and by-laws

Newmarket, Ontario, December 7, 2018 –Newmarket residents and business owners are encouraged to learn about and give feedback on the Town’s options around private cannabis retail locations in Newmarket; and whether there should be more restrictions on where people can smoke/vape cannabis in Town.

“Prior to Council making a formal decision as to whether the Town will allow private retail cannabis stores in Newmarket in January 2019, we are looking to residents to provide their feedback,” says Acting CAO, Esther Armchuk. “Through our survey, our aim is to inform Council of the options available to us and engage the public in the process.”

Residents and business owners have the opportunity to participate in an online survey. A phone call-out will take place over the next few weeks. Both surveys will close on December 28, 2018. The purpose of the survey is to engage the public and ask if they support the Town allowing private cannabis retail stores in Newmarket beginning April 1, 2019 and, whether to place more restrictions through Town by-laws on where people can smoke/ vape cannabis in Town.

Prior to taking the survey, all are encouraged to attend a Public Information Centre (PIC) on Wednesday, December 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Offices (395 Mulock Drive). There will be a formal presentation by Town staff followed by an opportunity for members of the public to ask questions.

Results provided from the online and telephone survey will be compiled into a report and provided to Newmarket Council. Discussion of the Town’s options will be made at a Special Council meeting on January 7 at 7 p.m. Both the PIC and the Special Council meeting will be streamed online at newmarket.ca/meetings. Once Council has made a decision on how they wish to proceed, the Town will be considering next steps.
