Black History Month: Council Update from January 19
At our January 19 Council meeting, we had the opportunity to hear from the Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association (NACCA) about the upcoming Black History Month programming taking place in partnership with the Town of Newmarket.
Starting February 1, NACCA and the Town will launch a full month of events and activities to recognize and celebrate Black History Month. This partnership has now been in place for eight years and continues to bring thoughtful, educational programming to our community.
NACCA Founder and Chairperson Jerisha Grant-Hall shared this year’s theme, The Promise We Carry. It’s a powerful reminder of the responsibility we all share to honour those who came before us, while continuing the work of building a more just and inclusive future for the next generation.
As part of the Town’s commitment, February will once again be officially proclaimed as Black History Month, and the Pan-African flag will be raised at the Municipal Offices on Monday, February 2 at 10:30 a.m. Residents are warmly invited to attend the ceremony and take part in the month’s events.
Council thanked NACCA for its leadership and ongoing partnership, and for the important role they play in strengthening understanding and connection across our community.
You can learn more about the planned events at Newmarket.ca/BlackHistory or watch the January 19 deputation from Council.
By being engaged and sharing information, we can create real, lasting change. Together, we build momentum, break down barriers, and create results for Ward 6.
with gratitude,
